Guided By Voices

The big, raw sound of GBV can feel like a thunderstorm in your bedroom one minute, and a merry Christmas in July the next. Just ask the band's cult following who've been hanging on Bob Pollard's every word for fifteen years now. The Daltrey delivery of this firebrand singer surely attests to some Apollonian gene that such vocal heroes alone possess. Just the same, the musical lighting bolts and snowfalls are measured in an American vernacular all the band's own. This year's Isolation Drills perhaps drives the point home more than any of their previous masterpieces: a sixer and a stereo won't solve all your relationship problems, but they can damn well aid a few of 'em.
